Is social media triggering your primal fear of rejection? How to thrive as a leader in the digital age
Technology, social media, and AI are advancing at an unprecedented rate, and our human DNA is struggling to keep up.
One of the biggest challenges I see with my clients is the constant exposure to judgment and potential rejection from thousands of online “observers.”
Think about it: every time you post an idea or share your thoughts online, you’re essentially putting yourself out there for a massive tribe to scrutinise. This triggers our primal fear of not belonging, which was once crucial for survival in close-knit communities.
But here’s the thing: those primal instincts aren’t always helpful in the digital age. They can be a huge energy drain from anxiety, self-doubt, and even paralysis when it comes to sharing your authentic voice.
So, how can we overcome this fear and thrive as leaders in the digital world?

Here are a few strategies:
- Self-Awareness: Recognise your triggers and understand how social media impacts your emotional state. I can’t stress the importance of ‘inner work’.
- Mindful Engagement: Be intentional about how you use social media. Limit exposure to negative content and cultivate a positive online environment.
- Boundary Setting: Don’t be afraid to unfollow, mute, or block accounts that drain your energy or trigger your fear of judgment.
- Focus on Your Values: Remember your “why” and let it guide your online presence. Share your authentic voice and connect with those who resonate with your message.
- Embrace Vulnerability: Don’t be afraid to show your human side. Authenticity builds trust and connection.
Remember, you’re not alone in this struggle. By understanding the impact of technology on our primal instincts and implementing these strategies, you can overcome your fear of rejection and confidently share your voice with the world.
